COVID-19 UPDATE March 18, 2020: Effective March 23, 2020, and until further notice, in addition to changes announced on March 13th, all non-essential and non-security personnel and contractors will be asked to stay home and practice social distancing. While there is no vaccine for the coronavirus, the best way to prevent illness is to avoid exposure.  Frequent hand washing and avoidance of touching one’s eyes, nose or mouth is crucial.  Avoiding other people who are sick and unnecessary travel are additional ways to reduce possible exposure.

COVID-19 UPDATE March 13, 2020: Following the Department of Juvenile Justice’s lead, who consulted the Secretary of Public Safety and Homeland Security and out of an abundance of caution, we will be suspending visitation until further notice.  We will make every effort for parents/legal guardians to have contact with their children via telephone free of charge.

Non-essential staff and volunteers will be asked to stay home/not visit.

To further limit exposure risks, we are asking attorneys to reconsider face-to-face meetings with their clients and call them using the telephone instead. Probation officers will maintain contact with juveniles by telephone.  Should a juvenile need an initial contact within the first five days of placement, these meetings will be completed via google hangouts, or other video conferencing.

This will be re-evaluated in 30 days.

Our Mission

We will provide secure custody for and care of juveniles in a safe healthy environment, while protecting the community. As an integral part of the rehabilitation process, supervision, guidance, and counseling are used to control and prevent delinquency by promoting personal responsibility, social accountability, and emotional growth.

Make sure to check back often as we will update this site frequently. We feel that public awareness of our operation is important as we strive to be a good neighbor.

We are a 24 bed secure detention facility operated under the authority granted by the New River Valley Juvenile Detention Commission consisting of the owner jurisdictions of the city of Radford and the counties of Giles, Montgomery and Pulaski. The owner jurisdictions pool financial resources to provide for the delivery of juvenile detention services to meet the philosophy and mission of the Commission.
