Colleen French
After working in human services for about 15 years, I’m grateful to have found my place at the “Home with a Heart.” Prior to coming to NRVJDH, I was the Assistant Superintendent of Programs with the Roanoke Valley Juvenile Detention Center for seven years. I have also worked as a social worker in the Alleghany Highlands. I have a Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychology & Sociology from the University of Virginia’s College at Wise (formerly Clinch Valley College) and a Master of Public Administration Degree from Virginia Tech. After college, it was clear that I would call the mountains of Virginia my home.
Growing up as a Navy Brat, my family moved all over the East Coast and Midwest. My favorite base was in Charleston, South Carolina but it doesn’t compare to the beauty of Virginia. I believe that my military upbringing sparked my desire to travel, to learn about different cultures and try new things. I love adventure. I’m a scuba diver wannabe (bad ears keep me near the surface) and one of my favorite destinations is Bonaire, a tiny island in the Netherlands Antilles. The snorkeling there is incredible! When I’m not traveling, I enjoy, bowling, hiking, knitting, and reading. I also love science fiction, especially Star Trek. IDIC (Infinite Diversity in Infinite Combinations) is an inspiring concept that first learned from Star Trek.
Here’s a little bit about my family. My amazing husband, Mike is a teacher for Roanoke County Schools. We are a host family for ASSE youth exchange, an organization which places youth from all over the world with American families. The exchange student lives with us while attending a year at a local high school. My parents, two sisters and brothers-in-law, three nieces and two nephews all live in the Tidewater area of Virginia. A description of my family would not be complete if I didn’t include my dog - Kira.
Thank you for your interest in the New River Valley Juvenile Detention Home. Live long and prosper!
